Original images held at Great Lakes Museum An original military studio portrait by Joyce Studios, of Thomas William Watters circa 1917. Thomas was born in Taree and employed at an oysterman when he enlisted in the Australian Army 4 August 1915. Thomas received a Gallantry Award on his gallantry as Guide, 29-31 August 1916, near Pozieres, under heavy fire, awarded by Major General Sir HV Cox, KCMG, CB, CST, commanding 4th Australian Division. During the Operations NW of POZIERES, from 29th to 31st August, Watters was conspicuous for the coolness with which he performed his duty as a guide to all parts of the front line, and later, in the absence of his Coy Sgt Major, for the manner in which he kept up a supply of grenades, flares and water for the front line.
