Description
A full-length studio photograph of a man [Joseph Cheers] dressed in military uniform holding a riding crop horizontally in both hands behind his back.
Inscriptions & Markings
Printed on in black ink on photo reverse: ‘ “M. Bennett, Bulford Camp Studio, Salisbury Plain.” ’ / ‘POST CARD / BRITISH MADE / Address’ .
Handwritten in blue pen on photo reverse: ‘Joe Cheers

Historical Note
An original military studio portrait by Bulford Camp Studio, Salisbury Plain, of Joseph Cheers circa 1916. Joseph Cheers was born in Bungwahl and was a labourer by trade. He enlisted in the Australian Army at West Maitland 10 January 1916 at the age of 22 years and two months. He was a Private in the 54th (Or possibly 34th) Infantry Battalion ADF. He embarked from Sydney 2 May 1916 on the HMAT Hororata ship number A20.
Medical records state Joe was accidently wounded German rifle grenade 15 May 1917, admitted Red Cross Hospital, burn wounds-multiple severe 11 July 1917..
Information noted in publication, ‘Of This Watershed’ by Stuart Weller, reads as follows: “Just prior to his evacuation to England and while he was a patient in the 10th General Hosp, Rouen, Joe was charged with the crime of: Conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline for wilfully injuring public property viz. 1 pr hospital leather slippers value 2 shillings and 6 pence 4 July 1917. For this crime he was required to pay the cost of the damage to the slippers (which amounted to half a day’s pay) and he also forfeited another 3 days pay.” .
Joe was discharged from service on the 26th December 1917
