Series Brooke family 3
Abstract/Summary London, the Blitz, autumn 1940: As the bombs fall on the blacked-out city, ambulance driver Elinor Brooke races from bomb sites to hospitals trying to save the lives of injured survivors. But Elinor sees little of her husband Paul as she works alongside long-time friend Kit Neville - and in this time of death and chaos, the normal boundaries seem like they're crumbling. Meanwhile, Paul believes that a child is dead due to a decision he made; and when a psychic says she sees the ghost of a boy hovering around him, he's inclined to give her words weight. As the bombing intensifies, the constant risk of death impels all three to reach out for quick consolation. Old loves and obsessions resurface, until Elinor is brought face to face with an almost impossible choice.
